Who We Are

Literacy for Leadership is a Christian organization that promotes literacy in St. Vincent and the Grenadines so that readers grow into leaders who share the joy of reading and the truth of God’s Word with their communities.

Literacy for Leadership has been called by God to work through the local church to have impact in the community. We believe in the power of the local church.

We teach a love for the mother tongue, Vincy Twang – a language that needs to be validated and used as a bridge to English literacy. We teach English as a second language while recognizing the orality of the peoples of St. Vincent and the Grenadines as their primary communication style.

We want our friends in St. Vincent and the Grenadines to connect with God’s Word in Vincy Twang and English so they can become leaders of influence who go into their communities, schools and churches to share the joy of reading and the love of God. Today we have Vincentian staff – leaders of influence – who are learning to validate their mother tongue and teach English as a second language in our reading centres.

We are in St. Vincent and the Grenadines because God has given us a deep rooted love for the people. It is this love that is at the heart of what we do - a love for their culture, language and orality - a love that compels us to make a difference.

To the mother with the young child we model the importance of patience, kindness and love. To her we model the joy of reading – the joy of reading as her child snuggles on her lap.

To the child we instill new dreams and opportunities. As they learn to read English, as they learn to love their mother tongue, Vincy Twang – their self esteem grows and so does their potential to be leaders of influence. This happens as they join classes at our Reading Centres operating in public schools and through after school programs at our libraries.

To the youth who wonders what the point is; who wonders if his life really matters we show them that it does. As they learn to read their dignity and hope is restored. They learn the value of perseverance; they learn how to give back as they encourage their friends to learn to read and they learn that they really do matter.

To the Church we teach that effective discipleship requires literacy – we teach that God’s people are to be world changers who reach out and do the right thing in their own communities. We identify and train the leaders who have “it” – the God given gift of leadership – to embrace leadership and share the joy of reading and the love of God. This happens as we work in partnership with the local Church and community.

To the community we teach that literacy can change lives and light the fire of hope, opportunity and freedom in the hearts and minds of all people. Literacy changes things – it changes lives.
